Needless to say, a good solid leash is mandatory when surfing top to bottom reef waves. The Mentawai Islands are generally not a place where a thin, comp leash will suffice; when you're there you want a sturdy, thick 6 foot leash for most conditions - and a longer leash when the waves get serious. On any surf trip, if you want to keep your board in one piece, bring along at least four leashes, you'll need them all. A good leash will keep you attached to your board and provide a lifeline to the surface when conditions reach critical mass.
