NBC’s World of Adventure Sports show with segments from Recent Red Bull Trip to the Marshall Islands
Schedule and Info at World of Adventure Sports
Surf exploration is nearly as old as surfing itself but no matter how far we look, the next frontier is still on the horizon. This winter, Red Bull athletes Levi Siver, Jason Polakow and Kai Lenny joined legendary boat captain Martin Daly and the rest of the Oxbow Waterman Team in the wild and remote Marshall Islands. Equipped with windsurfers, kites, stand-up boards, long and shortboards no waves went unridden.

So, Martin, you’ve got yourself an island surf sanctuary in the Pacific. Sounds nice.
I was trying to keep a lid on it. I didn’t want a repeat of what happened in the Mentawais. For the last five years, I’ve been lurking around there trying to get something going. I’ve got a bit of a mission going forward. I don’t want to be looking backwards. I’ve got a picture of myself sitting on a beach in the Marshalls, with a fishing line in the water and my son surfing by out front.
You’ve leased an island there? How long for?
Yeah, I’ve leased an island there, for 90 years. That should see me and my son out. It’s a fantastic place. I want to try and do it right, apply what I’ve learnt over the years in my travels around the world. The environment’s what attracts me. Hopefully we can keep it that way.
Nine Major Surf and Film Festivals have bestowed various awards to the surf documentary Sea Of Darkness. Director, Michael Oblowitz is a lifelong surfer, originally from South Africa who in most cases is a feature action filmmaker is ecstatic on the film’s success. This is his first venture into the surf film genre and he has hit the nerve to viewers with this edgy surf documentary. Announcement came in this past week on the coveted Audience Award at Wavescape South Africa, Durban and Best Film at Alma Surf Festival, Brazil for this story of renegade adventure surfers in Indonesia.
Sea Of Darkness shares the story of Mike Boyum originally from Maui, Hawaii and his cohorts as they seek the best waves in the Indian Ocean while taking risk in the high stakes of smuggling. The enigmatic Boyum was instrumental in establishing the world known surf spot Gland. His devil may care attitude and his quest of surfing the best waves, made a life of uncertainty and danger.
To most people, paradise is a place of unimaginable harmony. Ask any surfer, however, about paradise and they will not only describe it to you but tell you where it is and the best time of year to visit.

article featuring Mick Fanning, Jordy Smith, Julian Wilson, and more…
“Progression is one word that comes to mind. Hell, Jordy Smith pulled an ultra smooth rodeo flip, Julian got ultra deep on his backhand, and Kolohe Andino punted in front of his heroes. In fact, 13 total surfers were aboard the Indies Trader IV. Sound a little busy? When they’re elite athletes, the inst crowd on board simply pushed the level of surfing to about 13 on a scale of 1 to 10.”
Red Bull Mentawai: Anatomy of a Super Trip
Words like “epic”, “all-time”, and “classic” are heard all too often around the island chain that is the Mentawais… these are the words that come way too easily on the tongue in this swell-pounded region. You’ll be standing on the deck of a surf-charter boat sipping a cold one and the words might drift across the water to you…”awesome”, “best session ever”, “off-the-scale”. Maybe this renders them meaningless for when the real deal comes along. So you might forgive me for pinching myself as I stand on the back of the Indies Trader IV chatting to Mick Fanning after a barrel-fest session at Rags Right when he says “That’s got to be one of the top 5 barrel sessions I’ve ever had”.
The Atomic Atolls: Surfer Magazine – The world’s most famous boat spends two months in hidden and forbidden parts of the Pacific.
The MV Indies Trader spent a few season scouring out new waves in Micronesia – Rip Curl went back on the “Search” in the land of atomic testing and palm fringed islands.
Drop In, Tune Out: Special “Travel Section” article about a boat trip on the Indies Trader II.
“We’re like kids on Christmas. Up before dawn, too excited to sleep, we tear into the huge canvas bags that have carried our flotilla of surfboards to the other side of the world. In the darkness, we rip off the bubble wrap and toss aside the beach towels we’ve used to cushion our toys on this three-day voyage to the remote reaches of western Indonesia.”
