Surf exploration is nearly as old as surfing itself but no matter how far we look, the next frontier is still on the horizon. This winter, Red Bull athletes Levi Siver, Jason Polakow and Kai Lenny joined legendary boat captain Martin Daly and the rest of the Oxbow Waterman Team in the wild and remote Marshall Islands. Equipped with windsurfers, kites, stand-up boards, long and shortboards no waves went unridden.

1. A bit of research goes a long way. Get marine charts of the area you are interested in. The British admiralty pilot for the area will also have lots of interesting historical data on wind direction, frequency, and strength, as well as cyclone tracks, when they occur. Remember cyclones and hurricanes push swell ahead of themselves generally not so much in their wake. Look for areas where the wind is frequently offshore and coastline features like points and river mouths. Look at the water depth and the seabed gradient near these features. If the water is really deep right up to the coast…[read the full article]

The first time I had a chance to go to the Mentawais was way back in 1992, the trip Tom Carroll, Ross Clarke-Jones and some mutual friends did on the Indies Trader before it was a charter boat and when only a handful of people knew about the waves up there. The crew on that original trip were the only surfers in the Mentawais at the time, experiencing a sense of isolation and adventure that few surfers will ever share, surfing perfect waves, never knowing what lay around the next corner.

So, Martin, you’ve got yourself an island surf sanctuary in the Pacific. Sounds nice.
I was trying to keep a lid on it. I didn’t want a repeat of what happened in the Mentawais. For the last five years, I’ve been lurking around there trying to get something going. I’ve got a bit of a mission going forward. I don’t want to be looking backwards. I’ve got a picture of myself sitting on a beach in the Marshalls, with a fishing line in the water and my son surfing by out front.
You’ve leased an island there? How long for?
Yeah, I’ve leased an island there, for 90 years. That should see me and my son out. It’s a fantastic place. I want to try and do it right, apply what I’ve learnt over the years in my travels around the world. The environment’s what attracts me. Hopefully we can keep it that way.
