1. A bit of research goes a long way. Get marine charts of the area you are interested in. The British admiralty pilot for the area will also have lots of interesting historical data on wind direction, frequency, and strength, as well as cyclone tracks, when they occur. Remember cyclones and hurricanes push swell ahead of themselves generally not so much in their wake.
